Watching your dog struggle with pneumonia is terrifying. When my pup, Kronos, fell ill, I felt helpless—he was weak, refusing food, and had trouble keeping anything down. With the right round the clock care and a few key products, we got through it. These five products played a huge role in his recovery and might help your dog too.
1. HomeoPet Digestive Upset
Pneumonia often comes with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, making it hard for your dog to keep food down. Any whiff of food made Kronos nauseous and he would be wanting to throw up. HomeoPet Digestive Upset is a natural remedy that helps settle their stomach and reduce discomfort. The vet gave us anti-nausea and anti-acid prescriptions to help offset the digestive upsets of the antibiotics and effects of pneumonia which helped, but they didn’t give us enough for the full course of meds. This was what helped us finish out the antibiotics while offsetting the tummy upset the meds caused. I noticed a big difference within minutes of using it—my dog stopped wanting to vomit and was able to rest easier and keep food down.
2. Under the Weather Chicken and Rice Formula with Electrolytes
When my dog lost his appetite, this gentle, easy-to-digest food became a lifesaver. It’s made with real chicken and rice and includes electrolytes to help with hydration. Since it’s mild on the stomach, it was one of the few things he could eat without getting sick. And keeping your dog hydrated while healing from pneumonia is paramount so the included electrolytes helped keep him properly hydrated. The great thing about this is you can also re-hydrate a larger batch and keep the remaining amounts in the fridge for easy mealtimes later.
Kronos waiting at the vet for them to see him and help him-he was so stressed out in the back that they brought him back in the room with us where he settled right next to me and slept. He prefers being told what’s happening at the vet before they just move him around and he does amazing cooperative care with me, although fear free and cooperative vet care is a topic we’ll be covering in another blog post
3. Under the Weather Probiotic Syringe
Antibiotics are often necessary for treating pneumonia, but they can throw off your dog’s gut health. This probiotic syringe helped restore his digestive balance and kept diarrhea at bay. I gave Kronos multiple small meals throughout the day and the probiotics along with digestive enzymes were given at the mid-day meals far away from the meals that were with the antibiotics. The pre-measured doses and flavorful formula made it super easy to administer, even when he wasn’t feeling great. Kronos enjoyed these syringe doses so much he kept biting the nozzle asking for more!
4. Glandex
Pneumonia can weaken your dog’s immune system, making them more prone to digestive and gland issues. Glandex supports gut and anal gland health, preventing further complications. I gave this to my dog as he started to recover, and it helped regulate his digestion while boosting his overall health. It was the only thing that helped keep him regular and his stools healthy! This was also given at the mid-day meals to ensure the antibiotics could maximize their effectiveness in the mornings and evenings. Kronos was pretty happy about receiving more meals!
5. Brutus Bone Broth
Hydration and nutrition are crucial during recovery, and Brutus Bone Broth provided both. Packed with collagen, amino acids, and minerals, it kept my dog hydrated while supporting his immune system. Kronos doesn’t drink much plain water, even if it’s available and offered to him multiple times so keeping him hydrated requires a bit of know-how. He loves flavored water, goat milk, and bone broth though! Offering liquid in small batches throughout the day ensures your dog stays hydrated although some dogs like Kronos might have difficulty keeping liquids down if they drink too much at once. I poured this bone broth over his food with the mid-day meal or let him sip it straight in small bits given throughout the day—either way, he loved it.
Kronos rolling on his back after having collapsed or seized in the morning and going to the vet. He was still pretty weak, but I was happy to see him rolling around. They did an ultrasound and x-rays and said he had an enlarged heart, potentially DCM, a mass in his chest, and pneumonia. Follow up x-rays are pending comparison by a radiologist
If your dog is battling pneumonia, these products can make a huge difference in their recovery. Always consult your vet before introducing new supplements, but in my experience, these were game-changers. With the right care, patience, and support, your pup can bounce back and get back to full health.
